Airbnb host adds ‘no crypto mining’ rule after tenant installs 10 rigs

An Airbnb owner has been forced to implement a new ‘no crypto mining policy’ after a tenant installed 10 mining rigs that racked up a $1,500 electricity bill in just three weeks. Ashley, who runs a TikTok channel about her Airbnb experience, said her guest brought the computers to mine crypto at her property and also installed an electric vehicle charging point.  “It was cheaper for them to rent a house to pay for that electricity,” she said. The guest was apparently honest about his crypto mining and told Ashley that he made over $100,000 during his stay. Bitcoin mining firms keep building despite BTC mining profitability slump

Image
Crypto mining firm CleanSpark has been aggressively expanding its fleet of mining machines this year, despite mining profitability being far from its all-time highs. Despite a 44% decline in Bitcoin (BTC) mining profitability over the last year, some Bitcoin mining companies have continued to build and increase production, according to recent announcements. On June 1, American Bitcoin mining firm CleanSpark announced that it had purchased 12,500 brand-new Antminer S19 XP units for $40.5 million. The deal worked out at $23 per terahash per second (TH/s) which is lower than the average market price. Hot off the press! More miners have been purchased by $CLSK for lower than the current average market price. Approximately 12,500 Antminer S19 XP units were bought for $40.5 million - or $23 per terahash. Explained: Why Bitcoin users don’t send transactions directly to miners

Many people believe that Bitcoin users typically send their transactions directly to miners or mining pool operators. However, this is actually very uncommon. Instead, users generally broadcast transactions essentially at random — in other words, to whichever nodes happen to be connected to them and online at the time. Usually, a Bitcoin user has no guarantee that a miner will ever see their transaction. They simply hope that random rebroadcasts among volunteer nodes will ping-pong their transaction across the network and eventually, somehow into a miner’s node. This might seem odd and counterintuitive. Why not simply broadcast a transaction directly to a miner as a regular matter of course? Well, the explanation for this curious custom showcases the unique decentralization of the Bitcoin network . A counterintuitive yet effective path to decentralization Miners (or mining pool operators, specifically) select and order transactions within a block. Obviously, these mining operato...

Nigerian national blockchain policy gets government approval

Image
Nigeria's federal executive council has approved the national policy on blockchain to help the country develop a regulatory framework to govern the adoption of the technology. Nigeria, known to be one of the world’s most curious nations about Cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin (BTC), has approved the National Blockchain Policy for Nigeria during its meeting on May 3, 2023. The approval was in response to a memo presented by Professor Isa Ali Ibrahim (Pantami), the Honourable Minister of Communications and Digital Economy.  The Federal Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy (FMCDE), in the announcement, cited a report from PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), which predicts that the widespread adoption of blockchain technology across various industries could potentially contribute $1.76 trillion to the global gross domestic product by 2030, representing 1.4% of the world's GDP. The National Blockchain Policy for Nigeria was developed by the FMCDE through stakeholder consultations...

Bitcoin hash rates threaten blockchain decentralization

Image
The blockchain industry is facing a massive power imbalance — just like the traditional finance industry. Blockchain technology was introduced in 2008 as a decentralized, secure, transparent system for managing digital transactions. Its primary aim was to provide a solution to major problems with traditional transactional systems, including trust, security, decentralization and efficiency. Blockchain has since expanded beyond finance and has been used in supply chain management, healthcare, games, digital media and social media, among others.  However, the blockchain industry is still facing significant challenges — such as a lack of diversity, wealth control by a few holders, hash rate problems and a loss of the promise of decentralization. Hash rate and why it’s a problem The cryptocurrency on everyone’s mind — and in the digital wallets of more than 400 million people around the world — is Bitcoin (BTC). Bitcoin’s hash rate is the computing power required to validate transactions ...

Core Scientific shuts down 37K mining rigs it was hosting for Celsius

Image
Core Scientific estimated that canceling the agreement with Celsius will provide $2 million in revenue per month as long as Bitcoin stays around $16,700. Bankrupt cryptocurrency lender Celsius Network agreed to let Bitcoin (BTC) miner Core Scientific shut off more than 37,000 mining rigs it had been hosting for Celsius during the miner’s Bankruptcy proceedings. Core Scientific filed a revised proposed order on Jan. 3 which incorporated “revisions acceptable to Celsius” noting “all Celsius rigs will be powered down effective January 3, 2023 and will not be restarted during the transition period.” Previously, Core Scientific accused Celsius of failing to pay its power bills on Oct. 19 citing the non-payment as a major factor leading to its liquidity issues after the Bitcoin miner filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on Dec. 21. On Dec. 28 Core Scientific filed a motion seeking approval to reject Celsius’ contracts claiming the firm's failure to pay its power bills constitutes a materia...
